10/26/09 - Satan's Quick Chick takes the LEXUS RAVEN RUN S.-GII

TVG's Todd Schrupp may have had this one circled, but there were few others in the crowd at Keeneland who could boast a bet on Satans Quick Chick. The bay was batting .500 on synthetic surfaces, with three wins from six starts, but those victories came in a Turfway maiden test back in January and two allowance races routing at Presque Isle Downs May 22 and Aug. 30.

In her two most recent stakes attempts, she had finished fifth in the Diamond Ring S. on the grass at Arlington July 11 and, last time out, sixth in the HBPA S. at Presque Isle Sept. 26. There was little to recommend her as she took on a solid field of a sprinting fillies, but Satans Quick Chick wasn't fazed by the board. Finding herself at the back of the pack after getting squeezed at the start, she was tucked in at the rail throughout. The longshot had to steady behind horses at the top of the lane, but she found the necessary gaps once clear, spurting up the inside to get the job done.

10/11/09 - Gayego Closes Strongly for G1 Ancient Title Score

Warrendale graduate, Gayego (c, 4, Gilded Time–Devils Lake, by Lost Code) unleashed a powerful stretch run to post a career high in the GI Ancient Title. Acquired by Godolphin last year, the dark bay won this year's G3 Mahab Al Shimaal at Nad Al Sheba and was second in the G2 Godolphin Mile. He entered this spot off a victory in an optional claimer at Saratoga Aug. 17 in his first start since his return from Dubai. Allowed to race off the early pace here, Gayego rallied on the far outside under Garrett Gomez's vigorous hand-ride to win by just over a length from Crown of Thorns (Repent) as the 6-5 favorite. Delta Storm (Storm Boot) was third.

GayegoGayego, off since running second in the G2 Godolphin Mile Mar. 28, made a triumphant return to the U.S. The four-year-old was runner-up to Georgie Boy (Tribal Rule) in the GII San Felipe S. in March of his sophomore year, then followed up with a 3/4-length tally in the GII Arkansas Derby in April. The wheels came off in both the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness and he was shelved until the fall. A disappointing seventh when returning to sprints in the Damascus S. at Santa Anita in late October, he got back on track with a sharp confidence-boosting score in a Hollywood optional claimer in November that established a new track record for 6 1/2 furlongs (1:13.37). That would be his last start with trainer Paulo Lobo, as Gayego was purchased privately by trainer A.C. Avila, who then resold the colt to Godolphin. Making his first start wearing the famous blue silks, Gayego beat Big City Man (Northern Afleet) and Diabolical (Artax) in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal at Nad Al Sheba Mar. 5, but could do no better than second to Two Step Salsa (Petionville) in the Godolphin Mile 23 days later. Off since, Gayego was hammered down to odds-on favoritism and didn't disappoint. He rated toward the back of a tightly packed group, made an ominous three-wide move on the turn, lost a bit of momentum turning into the stretch, but was along in plenty of time.

8/11/09 - Golden Opportunity: Ferguson Lands Medaglia D'Oro Colt At FTSAUG

He was quiet early in the session, but John Ferguson let his presence be known when hip 159 entered the ring at FTSAUG Tuesday. Bidding on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed, Ferguson went to $875,000 to land his first buy of the night, a colt by Medaglia d'Oro out of Kendall Hill (Theatrical {Ire}). The dark bay was consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Whitechurch Farm, who had acquired the colt for just $165,000 as a KEENOV weanling. The January foal is out of a daughter of GSW Blue Jean Baby (Mr. Prospector), and from the family of MGSW Limehouse (Grand Slam).

At the end of the opening session of Fasig-Tipton's July Sale of Selected Yearlings, officials were left scratching their heads as to what to do to stop the hemorrhaging. But by the time the last yearling strolled through the ring at the end of Day 2, there appeared to emerge a glimmer of hope on the horizon as the session average of $87,117 dropped a mere 4.3 percent from last year's $91,043. "Based on [Monday's session], I wouldn't have been surprised if we were down more," said Faisg- Tipton Chairman Walt Robertson. "Truthfully, I am thrilled we were only down less than 5 percent [for average on Day 2]."

Helping to bolster that average on the second day was hip 250. Only the third horse through the ring, the daughter of sophomore sire Medaglia d'Oro offered more evidence that her sire is one of the hottest young sires in the country. In the days leading up to the sale, the bay drew plenty of admirers, but in the end, it was John Ferguson who signed the ticket for Darley. Purchased for $425,000, the Feb. 29 foal was consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Anne and David Hanley's Whitechurch Farm. One of five fillies by the Darley sire offered at July, the bay is out of Ting a Folie (Arg) (Careafolie {Ire}), a multiple group winner in Argentina

Warrendale's Kitty Taylor said, "She is just a lovely filly. She has a beautiful cap on her and has just a lovely walk. She has always had the right attitude and is by the right stallion. We felt pretty solid with the filly, so we were pleased with the price we got. I'm very pleased for the Hanley's."

The 13-year-old mare, who was purchased with this filly in utero by Kelly Farms Racing for $70,000 at KEEJAN in 2008, is a full-sister to dual Group 1 winner Campesino (Arg). Church secured hip 250 for $85,000 at Keeneland January seven months ago. "We really loved her," said White Church Farm's David Hanley. "We were very high on the stallion and obviously, Medaglia d'Oro has turned out to be a really sensational stallion. She has done really well in the time we have had her."

At this venue last time, the White Church Farm and Warrendale duo teamed up to sell the sale topper, a filly by Exchange Rate who brought $375,000. AWe love to sell here," said Hanley."We have had such good success here. Fasig-Tipton also does such a great job promoting the sale, and in the time that the new management came in, they have worked so hard to improve the sale."

Welker-Bred filly Brings $370,000 At Fasig-Tipton July 2009

The Medaglia d'Oro juggernaut showed no signs of slowing down late in yesterday's session as hip 471, a filly by the Darley stallion, realized a $370,000 final bid from Steve Davison's Twin Creek Farm. Consigned by Warrendale Sales on behalf of the filly's breeder Bert Welker, the dark bay is out of the unraced Peridot (Gilded Time). The 10-year-old mare, who is a full-sister to GSW Elaborate, is a great-grand daughter of champion and Grade I winner Smart Angle (Quadrangle).

Twin Creek racing manager Randy Gullatt signed the ticket on behalf of Louisiana-based Davison. Formerly a strictly private racing entity, Twin Creek now operates as a racing partnership--Twin Creek Racing--and currently has 16 horses split between trainers Todd Pletcher and Mike Maker. "She was just a standout Medaglia d'Oro," Gullatt said of hip 471. "The best physical in the sale. She had so much class, great size, a great body and great stretch. She had everything we were looking for."

According to Gullatt, the Jan. 11 foal will be taken to Florida to be broken in the fall, and a decision as to where the filly may race will be decided at a later date. "It all depends on where we need her to go," he said. Echoing the general theme of many buyers over the course of the two-day sale, Gullatt was pleased with the price. "I really thought she would bring more," admitted Gullatt. "She was just a standout."

Warrendale sold five of nine horses during Monday's opening session, but proved more successful yesterday, finding buyers for all but one of their yearlings. Among those successfully sold Tuesday were hip 442, a chestnut colt by Tapit who brought $180,000."It's been a really tough sale," said Warrendale's Kitty Taylor. "People are gravitating toward the proven sires and the horses that jump through all the hoops and perform physically and vet-wise. We did well, so we're pleased with our results."

Necessary EvilNecessary Evil (Harlan's Holiday), the only filly in the short field of five, turned yesterday's GIII Hollywood Juvenile Championship into a laugher with a front-running three-length victory over Zip Quik (City Zip). The bay filly, sent off the 6-5 favorite, tugged jockey Joel Rosario to the lead and the pair clicked off fractions of :22.36 and :45.73. Always travelling easily, she waved good bye to the boys through five furlongs in :57.58 and sailed under the wire as much the best, completing the six furlongs in 1:09.98. "Boy is she fast," Rosario said. "At the top of the stretch she changed leads perfectly--in fact she does everything perfect."

Necessary Evil used those same front-running tactics, zipping through fractions of :21.4 and :44.3 to win her five-furlong debut in :56.3 at Hollywood May 31. "She won nicely first time, but I think she did even better today," Joel Rosario added. Leandro Mora, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill said, "That was phenomenal. I had second thoughts [about her beating colts] because the colt [stablemate and third-place finisher Classical Slew] was training awesome also. The last workout they worked together she was a little bit tough for him. That's when we started thinking she could be competitive."

7/11/09 -Yankee Injunuity Wins Arlington Sprint

by David Zenner | July 11, 2009

Encore Racing Stable & James McMullen's Yankee Injunuity earned a hard-fought victory and a possible spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint this November when he gutted out a neck win over favored Chamberlain Bridge in the $200,000 Arlington Sprint on Saturday.  Because of a malfunction of the electronic timer, the official race time was a hand-timed 1:02.50.

The son of Yankee Victor rebounded from a fifth-place run in the Highlander at Woodbine Race Course in his last start to earn his first win in four starts this year and his seventh in 30 starts overall.  He picked up $117,600 to boost his bankroll to $308,451.

"I thought he'd run a littler sharper (than he did) at Woodbine - maybe it was the trip," said trainer Jim McMullen.  "He ran one of his biggest races in Indiana.  He came out of the Woodbine race great and breezed terrific over this course.  He showed up today."

More importantly, as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In," Yankee Injunuity is guaranteed a spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park should his connections opt to make the trip West.

Sitting fourth early under jockey E. T. Baird, the 5-year-old horse angled out entering the stretch, engaged Chamberlain Bridge mid-stretch and got up in the waning yards to get the victory.

Chamberlain Bridge, the 6-5 favorite, chased the pace, took the lead at the eighth pole but could not hold off the eventual winner.

"(Yankee Injunuity) ran me down," said Jesse Campbell, who rode the beaten favorite.  "My horse was running hard to the wire, and he just beat me. I knew that horse was one of the ones to beat, I've been riding him.  I actually held my horse off the lead for awhile.  When I kicked my horse, he went.  (The winner) just got me."

St. Joe was third in the seven-horse field, followed by Grand Sensation, Fort Prado, Shrewd Operator and Stradivinsky.

Yankee Injunuity paid $19, $5.20 and $3.  Chamberlain Bridge returned $3.20 and $2.40.  St. Joe paid $2.40.

The grey filly was given some time to regroup and responded with a 3 1/4-length victory in the GIII Dogwood S. at Churchill Downs May 30, an effort that made her the second choice to Grade I winner Hooh Why (Cloud Hopping) in this test under the lights. Allowed to settle into stride several lengths from the front, Hightap let Hooh Why get first run as the field straightened into the lane. She found her best stride approaching the furlong marker and, with rider Shaun Bridgmohan just waving the stick at her, surged clear and maintained a safe margin to the wire.

Malibu Beach came up just a half-length short in her debut at Delaware Aug. 24, but didn't face the starter again until May 20. The grey filly was a comfortable 3 1/4-length winner as the 2-5 chalk in that Delaware contest, and was the only representative here from her barn after Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot) and Hollywood Hills (City Place) were scratched by trainer Steve Klesaris. Away alertly, the Puglisi colorbearer showed the way through a :22.92 opening quarter while shadowed by Reforestation. That odds-on favorite drew even in front of the stands, but Malibu Beach dug in gamely on the rail and edged ahead late for her first black-type success.

Settled in midpack, but never more than three lengths from the front as the field streaked down the backstretch, Hightap advanced outside a rival on the turn, put a head in front of favored Luster entering the final furlong and drove clear. “I had a good trip. It worked out very well,” commented winning jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. “Around the middle of the turn I had a choice, and I saw the favorite in front of me and opted to follow her. 1/4/2009 McLaughlin Watching Gayego For Godolphin

by Jason Shandler

Kiaran McLaughlin has been training horses for the Maktoum family for 16 years, so when he was asked to “babysit” Arkansas Derby (gr. II) winner Gayego for a few weeks he had no problem at all. On Jan. 2, McLaughlin confirmed that Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Stables had recently purchased the 4-year-old son of Gilded Time and he will be pointed to the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I) later this year.

Gayego worked for McLaughlin for the first time Dec. 31 at Palm Meadows Trainer Center in Florida, posting a three-furlong work in :35.80. The trainer confirmed that the dark bay colt will not run in the U.S. before his trip to Dubai, which could come later this month.
“It’s fine. I’m very proud to be part of the Sheikh’s racing operation,” McLaughlin said. “I’m happy to help out wherever I can. It’s not a burden at all. Gayego is a very nice horse; he went very well the other day.”
Gayego, who set a 6 1/2-furlong track record (1:13.07) at Santa Anita in the San Pedro Stakes last January and set another mark at Hollywood (1:13.37) at the same distance last out in optional claiming company Nov. 30, was purchased by Godolphin privately from A.C. Avila, who had acquired the colt from original owners Cubanacan Stables in December.
Gayego is 4-2-0 from nine lifetime starts with earnings of $763,020. Bred in Kentucky by Hargus Sexton and Sandra Sexton, he was runner-up to Georgie Boy in the San Felipe (gr. II) before taking the Arkansas Derby by three parts of a length. That win propelled Gayego to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), where he finished 17th.

Gayego, who set the track record of 1:13 for 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita while winning the Jan. 20 San Pedro S., was looking for his first win since taking the Apr. 12 GII Arkansas Derby. The strapping colt, 17th in the GI Kentucky Derby and 11th in the GI Preakness S., returned from a five-month freshening to be seventh in the Oct. 25 Damascus S. at Santa Anita. The 2-1 second choice was pressed on the early lead through fractions of :21.91 and :44.19. He opened up a clear lead in upper stretch and was not seriously threatened to the wire to finish in track-record time. El Gato Malo (El Corredor), making his first start since winning the May 10 GIII Lone Star Derby, was last in the early going and closed mildly before getting edged for third

6/9/2007 Cotton Blossom Upsets Dream Rush in Acorn

by Dan Liebman

Cotton Blossom beats favored Dream Rush by a length in the Acorn Stakes.

Heavy choice Dream Rush went to the lead as expected but th steady fighter Cotton Blossom ran her down in deep stretch to win the $250,000 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) (VIDEO) for 3-year-old fillies by one length at Belmont Park Saturday.

Under John Velazquez in the one-turn mile event, Cotton Blossom bided her time as Dream Rush and Garrett Gomez bounded away on the lead through an opening quarter in :22.24 and a half in :45.10. Opening up a three-length advantage, Gomez was looking back on Dream Rush as Princess Janie and Christmas Kid failed to close ground in the turn. The field went six furlongs in 1:09.13.

But as they straightened away for home, Velazquez had Cotton Blossom in motion on the outside and she collared the heavy favorite and drove past to win her first grade I race by a length. Dream Rush ran second and it was 8 1/4 lengths back to Christmas Kid in third. The final time for the mile was 1:34.70.

Cotton Blossom, owned by Dogwood Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, is by Broken Vow and out of the Dixieland Band mare For Dixie. She was bred in Kentucky by Jim Squires.

“She was a little wide throughout, but outside of that, she had a clear run,” said Pletcher. “She had a nightmarish trip in the Kentucky Oaks. She wasn’t going to win, but she was going to hit the board. She was a deserving grade 1 winner today. She’s versatile enough where she can win between a mile and a mile and an eighth. She dug in, and the filly she ran down is a very nice horse.”

Cotton Blossom has now won at five furlongs, six furlongs, a mile and a 1 1/16 miles.

“It set up for her today,” said Velazquez. “The speed went and she had a really good trip. I couldn’t do anything with Dream Rush out there. I had to go out there and run my race. She pulled me up there and turning for home, I was in good position. This horse runs her race at any distance; today, it just really set up for her.”

Cotton Blossom was rebounding from a ninth place finish in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) while Dream Rush was coming off an impressive win in the Nassau County Breeders’ Cup (gr. II). Cotton Blossom's last victory came in the Florida Oaks March 17.

The bay filly Cotton Blossom improved to 4-2-1 in nine starts and the $150,000 earned Saturday increased her bankroll to $669,272

Teuflesberg Rallies From Last in Woody Stephens

Teuflesberg Rallies From Last in Woody Stephens
Teuflesberg rebounds from 17th in the Kentucky Derby to rally from last and win the Woody Stephens.

Teuflesberg, whose last start was a 17th place finish in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), came from last to win the $247,166 Woody Stephens Breeders’ Cup (gr. II) (VIDEO) for 3-year-olds by two lengths at Belmont Park Saturday.

Teuflesberg was beaten just a neck in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and then contested the Derby, showing some brief speed and then backing up to be beaten 35 3/4 lengths. He lately has run best when on the lead but in the seven furlong Woody Stephens, Robby Albarado took him back to last and then slipped the son of Johannesburg through on the rail to score the upset.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Giacopelli, Teuflesberg is owned by Jeff Singer, Gary Logsdon, Donnie Kelly, and trainer Jamie Sanders. The 3-year-old colt is out of the Devil’s Bag mare St. Michele.

“I was so excited when I saw him come up the inside during the stretch run," Sanders said. "It was unbelievable! We knew what kind of a horse he was going into the race. He has so much class, and he keeps doing it over and over. We were confident. Robby knows him well and he has so much patience with him.

"He doesn’t have to keep sprinting. He can run longer and he has proven that. So, we do have our options. We can go in the King’s Bishop or maybe even the Travers.”

Stormello, whose last start was also the Derby when he ran 19th, took the lead under kent Desormeaux, followed by 9-5 choice Deadly Dealer, through opening quarter-miles of :22.38 and :44.93. After stumbling at the start, Teuflesberg was unhurried while racing at the rear of the eight-horse field. He came charging as the field ran six furlongs in 1:09.08, splitting horses in the stretch and closing stoutly along the inside.

“He broke a little bit behind the field, but he got back into the race," Albarado said. "He has overcome a lot of obstacles in his career, and he showed it today. He has always run good at one turn. He has been well-matched this year, and this was a breath of fresh air for him.”

He hit the wire in 1:21.49 with Most Distinguished and Eibar Coa getting second by three quarters of a length. Stormello held on for third, three lengths in front of Bill Place. Street Magician, Not For Money, Deadly Dealer and Hobbitontherocks completed the order.

Sanders once worked as an exercise rider for trainer Nick Zito, conditoner of Most Distinguished, who said, “Today, the pupil beat the teacher. But I am happy for her. She’s got a really nice horse that can run at seven furlongs. I thought we had the race coming for home. He was so tough on the outside, but Teuflesberg came up the inside and got by him.”

Teuflesberg paid $18.20, $9.40, and $5.10 while Most Distinguished returned $10 and $5.20. Stormello paid $3.50 to show.

It was the fifth win in 17 starts for Teuflesberg, who won Oakawn's Souhtwest Stakes Feb. 19. The victory, worth $150,000, increased his earnings to $535,431.

Hystericalady Wins Humana Distaff in Laugher

by Claire Novak

5/5/2007 - Hystericalady earned the first grade one victory of her career when she overtook pacesetting Shaggy Mane at the top of the stretch and rolled to victory in the 21st running of the $340,800 Humana Distaff Stakes (gr. I)by a definitive four lengths on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Owned by Tom Clark’s Rancho San Miguel, George Todaro, and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, the 4-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor was ridden by Rafael Bejarano, who scored his fourth win on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) undercard. She covered seven furlongs in 1:21.87 on a track rated fast, paying $17.20, $5.80, and $4.20.

“We had her ready," Hollendorfer said. "She’s been training well all week on this racetrack, and yesterday we got to school her in the paddock with the big crowd. We wanted to try to get her to lay back today, and I didn’t know how that would work out. She likes to be up on the pace. But it worked today."

The Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks (gr. II) winner, who has now won six of 10 career races, was third at the start. She settled in second behind the front-running Shaggy Mane, who set moderate early fractions of :22.15 and :45.06 as they ran up the backside. The chestnut filly made her move at the head of the stretch, drawing away to hold off a late-running Pussycat Doll, who paid $3.20 and $2.80 as the even-money choice to place under Garrett Gomez.  Pussycat Doll won the Humana Distaff last year. Carriage Trail and Julien Leparoux returned $7.80 to show while 1 3/4 lengths behind Pussycat Doll.

“This filly has so much energy," Bejarano said. "I worked her the last time and she worked beautifully, just wonderful. I thought if she could run like she worked, it would be perfect. I didn’t want to be on the lead with her, just get her in a good position and at the quarter pole let her run.”

The winner’s share of $200,732 nearly doubled Hystericalady’s lifetime earnings to $403,283. She was bred in Kentucky by Abbott Properties.  Hystericalady was coming off a four-length optional allowance/claiming race at one mile at Bay Meadows one month ago.
